Hey all, so voting day for all you Utahns out there is Tuesday. And what are we to vote on? Referendum 1. What's it about?
Private school vouchers.

Given the number of people who go through, for instance, BYU's El Ed programme and then stick around in Utah after they're done, and end up working as teachers, 1. It's no wonder the teachers are underpaid (supply far outweighs demand) and 2. BYU's El Ed programme is NOT well-known for quality, so where those arguments about Utah's public schools having fabulous teachers come from, is beyond me... What I'm trying to say is, if parents want their kids to have a slightly better educational experience and the government is willing to give some help for private schooling, well, why not... I'd rather my own kids had a more monitored experience than that which occurs in many public schools these days.
I fully believe in vouchers. After working in the private school segment, I know there are many children who need this option. And I don't believe it takes anything from public schools.
I think I will be voting yes tomorrow, although it has taken some convincing to get me there. I do think that families should have the choice, but I wanted to make sure that the public schools aren't affected negatively by it. I'm also not convinced that many families will be able to use them, it's still a lot of money out of pocket. I guess we'll see!
Oops...I also wanted to add in reference to the first comment posted here, that my kids have had AMAZING teachers here in the public school system. All of them that I'm aware of received their education here locally. :-)
And, I didn't mean to say that I was voting tomorrow...I would be the only one down there! I meant to say, on Tuesday. :-)
@Dani- :-D I'm glad your experience with the teachers has been good. And, well... you could try voting this weekend if you wanted to. I'm sure they'd appreciate the avidness of being politically involved. But you might have to sleep on the doorstep a few nights... ;)

Well, considering Challenger won't use the voucher program it has been hard to get excited about it personally. However, with that said, I believe in parents guiding the education of their children.
Anonymous prefers to remain anonymous in this particular conversation. That said, I really AM glad that Dani, whoever s/he is, has had good experiences with the Utah public schools.
Well, let's just say we are having a good experience with our public school. I have many friends who are not happy with the schools that their children are in. However, they would be the first to tell you that it's not necessarily the teachers fault. I also have many friends who are teachers. They do the best they can with what they have been dealt. Class sizes make it difficult, as well as programs that the district makes them use even when many of the teachers don't like them. Anyway, I think that's all for me on this one.
